Zanzibar is an island off the Tanzanian coast with a history quite separate from the mainland, Omani, Swahili, Indian and Portuguese in turn. Most visitors split their time between Stone Town and a beach in the north or east. It pairs naturally with a mainland safari.

A UNESCO World Heritage site and the old heart of the island, a maze of coral-stone alleys, carved wooden doors and shuttered balconies. Small enough to get lost in safely, and best explored on foot with no particular plan.
White sand and clear shallow water at the northern tip of the island. Unlike much of the east coast, Nungwi is far enough north that the tide does not strand the water half a kilometre out, so you can swim through the day.
The traditional wooden sailing boats still working these waters are the enduring image of the Swahili coast. An evening dhow trip out of Stone Town or Kendwa costs little and is the thing most people remember afterwards.
