Madagascar

Baobabs, lemurs and landscapes found nowhere else on earth

Madagascar separated from the African mainland long enough ago that most of what lives there lives nowhere else, somewhere around nine in ten of its species are endemic. It is not a polished destination and travel between regions takes time, which is precisely why it still feels genuinely remote.

What to see in Madagascar

Avenue of the Baobabs
01

Avenue of the Baobabs

A dirt road near Morondava lined with Grandidier's baobabs, some of them several centuries old. The trees are endemic to Madagascar and the avenue at sunset is the single most photographed place in the country, deservedly.

Lemurs in the reserves
02

Lemurs in the reserves

Lemurs exist in the wild only in Madagascar. The ring-tailed lemur is the familiar one, but there are around a hundred species, and the reserves at Andasibe and Ranomafana are the most reliable places to see them properly.

Tsingy de Bemaraha
03

Tsingy de Bemaraha

A forest of limestone blades, eroded into razor-sharp pinnacles, crossed by rope bridges and walkways. A UNESCO site, physically demanding to visit, and quite unlike any other landscape on the planet.
